چکیده

An experiment is reported that compared expandable indexes providing full menu context with sequentialmenus providing only partial context. Menu depth was varied using hierarchies of two, three and four levels deep in an asymmetric structure of 457 root level items. Menus were presented on the World Wide Web within a browser. Participants searched for speci®c targets. Results suggest that reducing the depth of hierarchies improves performance in terms of speed and search e ciency. Surprisingly, expandable indexes resulted in poorer performance with deeper hierarchies than did sequential menus.

The Effect of Menu Type and Task Complexity on Information Retrieval Performance

Success in finding information in a website depends not only on the complexity of the information retrieval task per se but also on the way information is made accessible. Expandable menus preserve the full context of choice while the user is browsing. Sequen...

Clustering for Searching Near-Replicas of Images on the World-Wide Web

Internet piracy has been one of the major concerns for Web publishing. In this study we present a system, RIME, that we have prototyped for detecting unauthorized image copying on the World-Wide Web. To speed up the copy detection, RIME uses a new clustering/hashing approach that rst clusters similar images on adjacent disk cylinders and then builds indexes to access the clusters made in this w...
